about this blog

Tape Cassette

It's spring of 2020, and a virus has cast its shadow over the world. Here in New York City, as in many other places, we're hunkering down, sheltering in our homes (those of us who can), scanning the headlines, trying not to go mad with confinement or the dread of what waits outside.

I wanted to do something about it, so I decided to write about music that I love. A song a day, perhaps with tangents: extra songs, personal memories, philosophical blather. It started as a daily email to family and friends, in case what I wrote helped them get through their days too. A friend suggested I try to share these thoughts online as well; and so here we are.

It's also an exercise in building a mixtape in slow motion: each song featured here will be added to a growing Songs for Sheltering playlist on Spotify. Please feel free to share this blog and the playlist as much as you'd like.

Writing about these songs has been a light for me, driving away shadows. I hope you find some light in these posts as well. Stay safe, hang in there, and I'll see you on the other side.
