Here's one of my favorite instrumental tracks to relax to, by the electronic music act Telefon Tel Aviv. I love the languid, mellow keyboards and warm, leisurely bass, juxtaposed with the pointillistic stutter-and-glitch of the percussion (you may want to wear headphones to appreciate the details). To me the effect is of surface busyness and tranquil depth, held in perfect balance: an ocean whose churning waves sit atop a vaster calm.
It puts me in mind of what meditation teachers tell us we should hope to achieve: not a denial of our anxious thoughts but an acknowledgment of them, watching them go by like clouds or traffic as we sit off to the side, self-contained and at peace. I find it soothing to listen to, and today I hope you do too.
BONUS: If you like this track, I recommend the rest of TTA's Fahrenheit Fair Enough album (playlist here) as well as their gorgeous follow-up, Map of What is Effortless (playlist here).
